We went to Littlejohn Coliseum at Clemson University for the FIRST Robotics Palmetto Regional Competition. Nearly a thousand students from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio and Indiana competed to try to earn a spot to the international competition in Atlanta, Georgia later this summer.
Each race consisted of two teams, Red and Blue, each with three robots. Each robot had different duties, but I don't know what they were. One type could grab the balls, another just tried to make laps, and the other looked like it could only knock balls off the rack. There wasn't a rules sheet available, so I'm not sure how the teams scored or had penalities assessed. It was still fun to watch and Connor seemed to enjoy it.
I had to shoot a lot of the races from the very top row of seats. Otherwise, there were people standing right in front of me. I also had to use ISO 1600 sensitivity which is the highest my camera can go before it has to use special "boost" settings. The high ISO was necessary to get the shutter speeds fast enough. All-in-all I'm happy with what I got, but I know it could have been much better as well.
